Make a useful finish sample record

Before a project, read the product label and instructions, including ventilation, protective equipment, drying and disposal requirements. Choose a suitable offcut of the same wood for a sample instead of experimenting on the finished piece.

Label the back with the wood, preparation steps, product and date. Record the application process as you follow the manufacturer’s directions. Keep a photograph under consistent light so you can compare samples later.

Do not judge only from a wet surface. Allow the specified drying and curing time before evaluating the result. Keep the sample and its notes together; a remembered color name is not a complete record of a finish.
