Compare wood color in consistent light

Put the samples you want to compare beside each other in the same light. Label them clearly and keep their orientation consistent. Look at both color and grain rather than deciding from a small photograph alone.

Repeat the comparison in the room where the project will be used. Nearby walls, flooring and other objects can change your impression. Record the lighting conditions with each photograph.

Write down which qualities matter to your project before choosing. A sample that looks striking by itself may not be the one you prefer in the intended setting. Keep the alternatives as references for later work.
